Clockwork Angels
Brought up To Believe

Pumped? Me? Why yes, yes I am! :)

Cross-posted at Dean's World and Filed Away

UPDATE: Great show! And since this was the fist show of the Clockwork Angels tour it was also a little historic- Rush had guest artists on stage for the first time EVER in live performance. In this case it was an eight-piece string ensemble they used to back them up on the Clockwork Angels portion of the concert. It was well done and a good decision on their part; though it was a little strange, being so used to seeing Geddy, Alex and Niel up there all alone pounding it out for more than thirty-five years...
I love the bottom quote. I think if I were a musician who played before others, I'd model myself at least sartorially on Benny Goodman.

Too many musicians look like slobs up there on stage. Why not be retro? It's gonna be the new cool.

Can you name the youngest woman who wrote, performed, and recorded a number one hit song? Answer below the fold.

Andy Williams

I was one of the few cadets twenty-five years ago to attend a packed Eisenhower Hall concert with thousands of gray hairs in December with the wonderful Andy Williams. Most weren't nerdy enough to go. But I was.

I loved it. I am very sad to hear of bladder cancer that is terminal. I love his Christmas music.

Out And About

No post last night as I was out and about with two blokes from my company's European affiliate. Mark and Simon are from the UK and will be servicing our equipment rather than having European customers shipping their instruments all the way back to the US for service or calibration.

I took them out to one of our local favorite places to eat and then down to Weirs Beach, the center of activity for Motorcycle Week. (It was a bit deserted due to some of the rain that started early yesterday evening. It's also a bit early to see the large crowds, which should start arriving in earnest tomorrow.)

Neither Mark or Simon have been to the US before, so it was a bit eye-opening for them. They've been enjoying themselves immensely, taking particular delight in the food. One thing they find truly different: free refills of their coffee when dining. It just isn't done in Europe!

Deb and I are out and about tonight, going over to one of our favorite eating establishments before heading over to our local concert venue to see Crosby, Stills & Nash. (As both Deb and a friend from work have dubbed it: Crosby, Stills & Nash - The Geriatric Tour.)

It's going to be a great night out!

Cool Music Video

It seems it's a video end-of-the-week trend, this time with an unusual music video.

I have no idea how much preparation went into the production, but it looks to me like they spent a lot of time considering the amount of set up required and the unusual means they used to make their music. If nothing else it's quite clever.

Very cool.

Savants Among Us

We've all heard of savants before, generally being people with amazing abilities that are otherwise mentally disabled. Dustin Hoffman played one in the movie Rainman. Their extraordinary abilities span a wide range, covering everything from mathematics to music.

In this case, 60 Minutes brought us the story of Derek Paravicini, a blind autistic man with the ability to play piano like no one I've ever seen before.

Rather than describing what makes him so incredible, better that you watch for yourself.

I have to say I liked the part where he transformed Beethoven's Fur Elise, making it sound as if Mozart had written it instead.
I'm listening to a live broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera. Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor.  I had wanted to go to the Music Hall in Portsmouth to watch it live, but family duties conflicted.

I have to put my priorities front and center.

But reading about the MET, which I dearly want to visit and watch a performance some day, I read this review. Ashtrays in each bathroom stall? I love it.

BeeGees-Pink Floyd Mash-Up

I like good mash-ups (the mixing of two different songs into one).

I saw this one over at Rachel Lucas's and knew I had to post it.

I always knew Roger Waters was a BeeGees fan....

An amateur's simply amazing performance of U2's "With or Without You" on youtube. Way to go, Ralqh!
I'll never tire of Joshua Tree and its great songs. This recent rendition, however, may be the cleanest and crispest I've heard from an amateur, one who does it for the love. Like bloggers.

Stunning Music Video

I watched it without the sound. Stunning. Rock 'n roll to me is Bryan Adams. Pappa Haydn is my man.

HT: J.A. Carruthers

A beautiful score. Schumann's not Haydn or Tchaikovsky. But I like this. I need to learn more about him, as I really like classical music. Haydn's symphonies and Beethoven and esp. Mozart are my favs. But researching Schumann I came across this phenomenal site that should quickly get me up to speed.
