It--"The Talk"--got him dismissed as a writer for National Review. But then again that mag has declined in significance for being less truthful and incisive about race and immigration than it used to be.
An unfortunate story has come out of Doc River's hometown of Maywood, a gang-ridden suburb of Chicago with 26,000 people (20 murders there in 2003, three more than for all of NH), which has seen a severe increase in crime. The demographics have also gone from largely blue-collar white to nearly 75 percent black, as reported n the 2010 census.
The sad anecdote that reveals a lot is in England's Daily Mail, where I chiefly go to find out what is happening in my country, though this time local coverage provides more info.
An off-duty cop on a motorcycle late on a Saturday night is traveling. A four-year-old girl, obviously not properly supervised after 10 pm and imprudently let out with an 18-year-old male cousin to a chicken restaurant across the street, darts out into traffic, not anywhere near a crosswalk, in a way that makes it impossible for the man on the motorcycle, an eight-year veteran with the Chicago police, to avoid striking both the little girl and her cousin.
The cop does everything he can to avoid injuring the people, though, sustaining injuries to himself, by leaping from the bike so it goes on its side. But the girl & cousin are still struck, though the injuries to both are minor--the abrasions on the girl's face turn out to be more painful than life threatening.
That's when an ugly situation gets uglier.

Christopher Middleton, 26, the girl's father, hears the accident and
comes out to investigate. Finding his daughter bleeding and injured by
the motorcycle, he begins assaulting the driver with the help of the
18-year-old.
The 43-year-old man, whose identity hasn't yet been revealed, already injured and lying flat on the pavement, is being beaten severely by two men and is at the point of losing consciousness.
Having recourse to a sidearm, which is only given to civilians in Chicago who happen to be off-duty cops, he suddenly brandishes his weapon, shooting to death the little girl's father. It's alleged by the police he announced to the people he was a cop, but the family of Middleton assert the opposite.
Lesson: Follow Rule 10(a). If one can't avoid it or, as an off-duty cop feels as though he needn't, a new rule needs to be invented.
If one is involved in a vehicular mishap--even if it's not one's fault--with a black in a largely black area, be prepared to leave immediately. Yes, this would constitute a felony hit-and-run, a nasty business.
But it's perhaps better than being beaten to the point of unconsciousness or worse.
And the family of Christopher Middleton seems to be saying that he wouldn't have attacked the man if he knew he was a cop who had a gun. Okay, But then don't also assert what a gentle soul Mr. Middleton was. The thug got unlucky, it seems likely to me.
If more people carried concealed--and the thugs knew it--this might actually promote what Robert Heinlein is famous for saying: An armed society is a polite one.
