The President On Libya

Did I listen to the President's speech about our involvement in Libya this evening? Nope. Not to a single word.

Am I disinterested in what he had to say? Nope, not at all.

So why didn't I watch the speech? It's quite simple, really.

It's because I find it very difficult to watch as his head swivels back and forth between the two teleprompter screens. It's distracting as hell. Plus I find his cadence to be equally annoying.

Instead, I read it from the White House website. I can usually read it far faster than he can give it and I'm less annoyed than if I watched him read it.

since i have never actually SEEN Obama speak (no TV) i honestly couldn't tell you if watching him would be any different from hearing him. i don't like how he sounds, though, (especially in the beginnig when he sounded very preachy) and i'm sure that does have something to do with the fact i think he is one of the worst presidents in history.

Naw, Paulina, it's not him. I had the same kind of problem with Dubya. I always preferred to read the text of the speech myself. It was always less painful, made more sense to me, and took a lot less time.

Let's face it, delivery is everything. Now if someone like Churchill or Reagan had given the same speech (I'm not referring to their politics, merely their speaking ability), I would have enjoyed listening (even if I disagreed). They both had great delivery, regardless of the message.

I wonder how much of your displeasure has to do with your overall dislike of the man/his policies. I have no trouble watching and listening to Obama, but I did have a really hard time with Bush, with whom I was in almost complete disagreement about everything.
I have always found the teleprompter argument to be somewhat petty. Don't most if not all politicians use some sort of prompter or reference for when they speak? In fact it was when Obama's oratory skills were being exalted that the teleprompter objectors appeared. It just makes me think that it's one of those instances when an opponents main strengths are turned against him. A good tactic but as I say, petty in my opinion.

I listened to it on the radio. the host made it slightly more bearable with his little bits of commentary.
