Um, I actually wouldn't be so hard on the President in this. I think most Americans are suffering from Empire fatigue, Peter. Imperial overstretch. (HT: Instapundit)
In America we oscillate between the largely polar opposites of liberty and empire. That's the thesis of Richard Immerman's new book, Empireof for Liberty. (If you listen to this podcast from the Cato Institute, though it's long, you'll get the joke of the cross-out: It comes from the pen of Thomas Jefferson.) It was just this morning I heard on the BBC World Service how in Afghanistan the popularity of making pre-pubescent boys into dancing prostitutes is gaining in popularity. I first heard of this utterly depraved evil from the indispensable Diana West. Suttee, anyone?
