Senate Franken "Facts"

How's that democracy thing working out for you, Minnesota? It was fun and different electing a comedian to the US Senate, wasn't it? Well, the result speaks for itself as he debates John Thune, a pretty boy from South Dakota, who happens to have a command of the facts and figures more than the writer of "Rush Limbaugh is a big, fat idiot" does. Jeanne Shaheen acts as president of the Senate, reminding (4:50 into the debate) Franken in precious fashion that he has the floor. Even she--and believe you me she's no MIT-trained engineer--understands Franken is flailing badly. It must be his rambling, slurred speech, and unfocused presentation that's the giveaway, and some colleagues do attempt to come to his aid, such as a leftist from Ohio, Sherrod Brown. (His daughter Emily, for example, according to Wikipedia, is employed by the notorious left-wing labor union brown shirts, the SEIU, who are in favor of open borders says Michelle Malkin. The pear hasn't fallen far from the tree in this case.)

The disagreement centers on the fact that although taxes for the proposed Pelosi Health Care Destroyer (PHCD) go into effect days from now, most of the benefits don't kick in for a few years. 2014 to be precise. Now there are some small potatoes that do kick in immediately along with the taxes. Here's what Franken says:
THUNE: Will the senator from Minnesota yield for a question?

   FRANKEN: Absolutely.

THUNE: Did the senator from Minnesota when I was pointing out on the chart understand the point I was making, that the tax Increases start 18 days from now, and that the benefits, the spending benefits under the bill which -- which are the premium tax credits and the exchanges that are designed to provide the benefit that's delivered under this bill don't start until 2014?

FRANKEN: The senator from South Dakota said did I realize that I was talking about the spending doesn't start for 1,800 days on health care, the benefits don't start. Here's one. $5 billion [A droplet of water from the gubmit trough.] in immediate Federal support, starts immediately for a new program to provide affordable coverage for uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions. I have a whole list of things that start.

Prohibit insurers from imposing lifetime limits on benefits, starting day one. Starting day one. ... We are entitled to our own opinions. We're not entitled to our own facts. The fact is benefits kick in on day one, and the large majority of benefits kick in on day one, And we shouldn't be standing up here with charts that say the exact opposite.

God help us all. John E. Sununu and Norm Coleman in the Senate, instead of Shaheen and Franken, would be a vast improvement. It's amazing that even on factual matters--that the majority of the proposed health care legislation doesn't go into effect until a few years from now, while we begin being taxed right away on them--we inhabit different universes. To see the liberal/socialist blogosphere applaud Franken's imaginary devastation of Thune makes me shake my head. There's no reasoning with these people.
